Is FaceTime Next?

This is Posted by: David Coleman

In the last few days Symantec bought IMLogic which deals with instant messaging policies for the enterprise and helps deal with IM security. With IM becomming more and more accepted as a means of RTC (real time collaboration) can some of the other IM security companies be far behind on the road to acquisition?

[More:]

One of the other companies that deals with IM security and policies is FaceTime www.facetime.com who has competed with IM Logic for years. The question now is, will MacAfee, or maybe even AOL or Yahoo acquire FaceTime? And what about other companies like Akonix? We would love to hear from you about what you think?

Possibly, but not until the IMlogic acquisition settles in.

Initially the acquisition will appear to be good news for competitors, such as Akonix and Facetime. Customer uncertainty brought on by the acquisition will slow down new IMlogic sales. However, the competitor’s nagging concerns will be:
• With Symantec's existing channel and market clout, to what degree will IMlogic technologies grow – and even morph?
• IM security and management is a point product in a niche market. How long can point products exist when an increasing number of business applications are integrating IM, and particularly presence, at the platform layer?

There seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding on this site about what IMlogic does. I have seen that they provide interopabilty and compete with MSFT. I have seen that they provide presence awareness and integration. I have seen that they provide an IM client. In reality none of this is true. IMlogic, Facetime and Akonix are essentially IM proxies/gateway. They allow you to define and enforce your IM policy.Security and Archiving are the two big features. They support the usual Public IM clientslike AOL and also enterprise IM like Sametime or Live Communications server.
